How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in the UK?

UK SEO pricing explained, from £85/month local packages to £2,000+/month agency retainers, and what you should actually expect for your budget.

SEO pricing in the UK is genuinely all over the place. You'll see packages advertised from under £100 a month up to £5,000+ a month, with very little explanation of what the difference actually buys you. Here's an honest breakdown.

Why the Range Is So Wide

SEO isn't one service, it's a bundle of different activities, and providers package them very differently. A £85/month package and a £2,000/month retainer aren't the same service at different prices, they're often genuinely different scopes of work.

What You Get at Each Price Point

Under £150/month: Local, Foundation-Led SEO

This tier typically covers Google Business Profile setup and optimisation, basic on-page SEO, and local keyword targeting. For most local, service-based small businesses, this is where the bulk of the available return sits, our own SEO service starts at £85/month for exactly this reason.

£300-£800/month: On-Page + Content

Adds regular content creation, more extensive keyword research, and ongoing technical improvements. Worth it once the local foundations are in place and you want to compete more broadly.

£1,000-£2,000+/month: Competitive or National SEO

This tier is for businesses competing nationally or in genuinely crowded markets, involving link building, extensive content programmes, and dedicated technical SEO resource. Most local small businesses don't need this.

What Return Should You Expect?

This is the number that actually matters, and it's the one most SEO pricing pages avoid. We rebuilt the website for Mark Thompson (Leeds) Ltd, a heating, plumbing, gas and air conditioning business in Leeds, with SEO built in from the start. Their old site generated zero enquiries. In the first month after launch, Google Search Console showed 19,200 impressions, 160 clicks, and 16 leads. Mark now gets around 25 jobs a month through the site.

We don't know his exact average job value, so we won't put a precise revenue figure on that, but for a heating, plumbing and gas business, even a conservative estimate puts the monthly value of that work well ahead of what the SEO and website cost. That's the standard worth holding any SEO spend to: is it generating enquiries you can trace back to it?

For comparison, buying those same 160 clicks through Google Ads would have cost roughly £500 in a single month, and the same again every month after. Our guide to PPC vs SEO for small businesses compares the two side by side, and how much Google Ads cost in the UK covers the ad side in detail.

FAQs

How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?

UK small business SEO typically ranges from around £85/month for local, Google Business Profile-led packages, up to £500-£1,000/month for broader on-page and content work, and £2,000+/month for competitive national campaigns run by larger agencies.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

For most local small businesses, yes, as long as it covers Google Business Profile optimisation, review generation, and basic on-page work. These are the highest-impact, lowest-cost activities in SEO. What is not worth it is cheap SEO that relies on outdated tactics like spammy backlinks or keyword stuffing.

What return can a small business expect from SEO?

It varies by industry, but one Marketing Handled client, a heating and gas engineering business, generated 16 leads in the first month after launching an SEO-led website and now receives roughly 25 jobs a month through it, from a site that previously generated none.
