The Best SEO Strategies for Small Businesses in 2026

The SEO strategies that actually move the needle for small businesses, ranked by effort vs impact, with a real before-and-after example.

There's no shortage of SEO advice online, and a lot of it isn't worth a small business owner's time. Backlink schemes, keyword-stuffed blog posts, technical tweaks that move the needle by fractions of a percent, most of it is built for a different kind of business, or a different kind of Google.

This is a ranked list of what actually works for a small business, in the order we'd do it, based on real results rather than theory. If you're completely new to SEO, our beginner's guide covers the basics first, this picks up from there.

1. Google Business Profile + Reviews (Highest Impact, Least Effort)

If you do nothing else, do this. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you on Maps and in the local pack, the block of three businesses that appears above the regular search results for local searches, and it's free. Genuine, recent Google reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors there is, and they double as a trust signal for anyone comparing you against competitors before they've even visited your site.

For a heating, plumbing, or trade business, this alone can be transformative. We rebuilt the website for Mark Thompson (Leeds) Ltd, a heating, plumbing, gas and air conditioning business, with a properly set-up Google Business Profile as part of the foundation. In month one, Google Search Console showed 19,200 impressions, 160 clicks, and 16 leads, from a site that was previously generating zero. Mark now gets around 25 jobs a month through it. If you haven't set this up properly yet, our Google Business Profile guide walks through it step by step.

If you'd rather this was handled for you, this is exactly the foundation covered by our SEO service, Google Business Profile setup and optimisation is included from the entry-level package.

2. Clear, Specific Page Content

Google can only rank you for what it understands you do. Vague copy like "quality you can trust" gives it nothing to work with. Specific copy, naming your services and the areas you cover, tells Google exactly what to rank you for and helps visitors self-qualify before they even call.

3. Local SEO Signals

For any business that serves a specific area, this is where a lot of the accessible ranking opportunity lives, less national competition, clearer intent from searchers. See our full local SEO guide.

4. Technical Foundations

Page speed, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, and clean structured markup. These won't win you rankings on their own, but a slow or broken site actively works against everything else on this list.

5. AEO and GEO: Showing Up in AI Answers

A newer factor, but a growing one: people are increasingly asking ChatGPT and similar tools for recommendations instead of searching Google. This is a related but different discipline. Read SEO vs AEO vs GEO explained and our guide to getting found on ChatGPT.

6. Ongoing Content and Backlinks

Lower on this list not because it doesn't work, but because it's the slowest and most effort-intensive. Worth doing once the fundamentals above are in place, not before.

What This Should Cost

A common question once the strategy is clear is what it should actually cost to have done. We've broken that down separately in how much SEO costs in the UK.

FAQs

What is the single best SEO strategy for a small business?

A fully completed Google Business Profile combined with a steady stream of genuine Google reviews. It is free, fast to set up, and directly affects whether you appear in the local map pack, which is where most local search clicks go.

Do Google reviews actually affect SEO rankings?

Yes. Review count, review recency, and average rating are all factors in local search ranking, alongside how you respond to reviews. Businesses with more recent, positive reviews consistently outrank similar businesses without them.

How long before SEO strategies show a return?

Google Business Profile and review-based strategies can show impact within weeks. A Marketing Handled client generated 16 leads in the first month after launching a site built around these fundamentals, and now receives roughly 25 jobs a month through it.
