A Beginner's Guide to SEO for Small Businesses

New to SEO? Here's what it actually is, how Google ranks websites, and the handful of things worth doing first as a small business.

SEO gets described like it's a dark art, technical, slow, and only for people who understand code. For a small business, that's mostly not true. Most of what moves the needle is straightforward, and a lot of it is free.

This is the starting point we'd give a business owner who's never touched SEO before, no jargon, and grounded in a real example rather than theory.

What SEO Actually Is

SEO, search engine optimisation, is the process of making your website easier for Google to find, understand, and trust, so it shows up when someone searches for what you do. Google ranks pages using hundreds of signals, but for a small business, three groups matter far more than the rest: what's on your site, how trusted your business looks, and how good the technical foundation is.

A Real Example: What a Website Fixing These Basics Looks Like

One of our clients, Mark Thompson (Leeds) Ltd, a heating, plumbing, gas and air conditioning business, had an old website generating zero enquiries. We rebuilt it with proper SEO foundations, clear service pages, local keywords, a fast mobile-friendly build, and a connected Google Business Profile.

In the first month alone, Google Search Console showed 19,200 impressions (how often the site appeared in search), 160 clicks, and 16 leads. Mark now pulls in around 25 jobs a month through the site. We don't know his exact average job value, but even a conservative estimate for a heating and gas trade puts that well into five figures of monthly work generated from a website that was producing nothing before.

That's what "SEO basics done properly" can look like, not a years-long slog, but a foundation that starts earning its keep within weeks. If you'd rather this was handled for you, that's exactly what our SEO service covers, from £85/month with a free audit.

Where to Start: The Fundamentals

1. Get Your Google Business Profile Set Up

This is free, and it's the single highest-leverage thing a small business can do. It's what puts you on Google Maps and in the local pack. Read our full setup guide if you haven't done this yet.

2. Get Genuine Google Reviews

Reviews are a trust signal to Google and to customers deciding between you and a competitor. Businesses with more recent, positive reviews consistently outrank those without, and reviews are one of the fastest ways to build the "prominence" Google looks for. Ask happy customers directly, most will say yes if you make it easy with a direct link.

3. Write Clear, Specific Page Content

Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it. A homepage that says "quality service you can trust" tells Google nothing. A page that says "heating and gas engineers covering Leeds and West Yorkshire" tells it exactly what to rank you for.

4. Fix the Technical Basics

Fast loading, mobile-friendly, secure (HTTPS), and structured with proper titles and headings. None of this is visible to visitors, but it's foundational to how Google evaluates your site.

5. Build Local Relevance

If you serve specific towns or areas, say so naturally in your content. Read our guide to local SEO for the specifics.

What About AEO and GEO?

Increasingly, people also ask ChatGPT and other AI tools for recommendations instead of searching Google directly. That's a related but distinct discipline, AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). We cover the difference in SEO vs AEO vs GEO explained.

How Long Does It Take?

Some things move fast, Google Business Profile changes can show up within days. Others, like earning reviews and building content, are ongoing. The next step from here is our SEO strategies guide, which ranks what to prioritise by effort versus impact. If you're weighing this up against a monthly budget, see how much SEO costs in the UK.

Want the Basics Done for You?

We include the SEO foundations in our monthly website plans, and offer SEO as a standalone service from £85/month with a free audit included. See our SEO service or get in touch to talk it through.

FAQs

What is SEO in simple terms?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the process of making your website easier for Google to find, understand and trust, so it appears when someone searches for what your business offers. For a small business, this mostly means clear page content, a set-up Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, and a fast, mobile-friendly site.

What should a small business do first for SEO?

Set up and fully complete a Google Business Profile, start collecting genuine Google reviews, and make sure your website clearly and specifically describes what you do and where you operate. These three steps have the biggest impact for the least effort.

How quickly can SEO show results?

Some changes, like a completed Google Business Profile, can show up within days. One Marketing Handled client, a heating and gas engineering business, saw 19,200 impressions and 160 clicks in Google Search Console within the first month of launching a site built with SEO foundations in place.
